The California Ballet Performs "A Midsummer Night’s Dream" at the San Diego Civic Theatre on April 11-12

Based upon Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, California Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream returns to the Civic Theatre stage for just one weekend.

Based upon Shakespeare’s most popular comedy, California Ballet’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream returns to the San Diego Civic Theatre in April 2015. Set to music by Mendelssohn, the ballet portrays the adventures of four young lovers and a group of amateur actors and their interactions with woodland fairies and a duke and duchess. Taking place in a mythical Athens and an enchanted forest, there is a handsome fairy king, a misguided parent, star-crossed lovers, a weaver who’s transformed into a half-donkey, forest creatures, wood sprites and elves. In the end, it’s about the world’s most popular pastime, falling in love. But as Puck knows, falling in love can make fools of us all.

Children and adults are invited to bring their wings and participate in a Fairy Frenzy prior to the performance. Fairy themed cocktails and mocktails will be available in concessions. A costume contest will take place on the red carpet, the winner will be announced on Facebook following the run. The winner will receive premium Gold Rope tickets to The Nutcracker in December 2015. Fairies are invited to shed their wings at the Wing Check during the performance.

From its inception in 1968, California Ballet Company has been a fertile ground for the re-staging of the demanding classics and for the creation of its own trail-blazing works. Later on, the CBC bestowed on emerging young choreographers, many from San Diego, an opportunity to create and to develop through the company their own personal dance statements. In addition, the CBC has influenced, nurtured and enriched the lives of generations of committed dancers, many of whom are now performing across four continents.

The California Ballet Company, San Diego’s resident ballet company, is a non-profit organization providing educational and enrichment programs for all ages. California Ballet presents high quality professional ballet performances and educational programs for the public community of California, through support of a resident company of professional dancers. As part of its mission, California Ballet has recognized the importance of providing educational programming to help broaden its audiences and their understanding of ballet.

Since its inception in 2005, the Ballet Company’s Sharing the Art program has made over 20,000 performance tickets available to adults and children in San Diego County. For many of these individuals, this will be the first, time they will experience the magic of live theatre. The following groups are the current primary recipients of the Sharing the Art program:

  • Children with life threatening diseases (Rady Childrens Hospital/Emilio Nares Foundation)
  • Underserved Families (The Children’s Initiative, The Salvation Army, Episcopal Community Services, The Monarch School)

Military Night At The Nutcracker: Each year California Ballet celebrates military families by offering 1000 tickets to a special Military Night at the Nutcracker performance. This offer is made possible through Operation Homefront Southern California.
