One of the real pleasures of living in Rancho Santa Fe is our year-round temperate climate. With an average annual high of 82 degrees and a low of 43 degrees, you could say we hit the weather jackpot. Not only that, but Rancho Santa Fe residents enjoy 263 sunny days annually, much higher than the national average. This amazing climate is ideal for local farmers, and residents of Rancho Santa Fe get to cash in on the bounty. That’s why we’ve chosen the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market as one of our Local Treasures.
New owners researched longevity
The Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market had a transition of ownership in January, and new owners Diane Haworth and Michael Varbaek have a real vision for this community event. They spent the last four years visiting “longevity villages” all over the world, studying communities that had the highest concentration of people over the age of 100. They used their findings to revamp the market.
Creating a sense of community
What Diane and Michael discovered is that no matter what they ate or how much they exercised, the healthiest communities were those that had a “town square concept” – a central meeting spot for the entire community. They’ve translated that concept beautifully to the Rancho Santa Fe Farmers Market. Here you’ll not only be able to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers, but you’ll also get to know the farmers better. At each market, you can enjoy live music, sit in the fresh air, watch the kids make crafts, listen to guest speakers, or indulge in a prepared meal. It’s like a European Farmers Market where you can gather each week to nourish both your body and your soul.
What you’ll find there
In addition to all the amenities listed above, the market has space for up to 70 vendors. You can find all sorts of goodies here, from micro-greens to fresh, seasonal strawberries. Chefs are on hand to create delicious dishes including crepes, pastries, paella, fresh Italian pasta, Mexican seafood, and much more. There are also many artisans at the market selling their wares. You’ll find handcrafted jewelry, paintings, photographs, linens, bath and body products, and even rare succulents. When you need a breather, take a seat at one of the many bistro tables scattered around the venue, each adorned with fresh flowers for you to enjoy. This place is really a feast for all the senses!
Stay in the loop
Diane and Michael are so dedicated to your well-being that they’ve created a newsletter that features a new longevity recipe each week. You can sign up for the newsletter on their website or stop by the managers’ booth at the market.
