Local Treasure: Helen Woodward Animal Center

Calling all animal lovers! We’ve got an extra-special local treasure here in Rancho Santa Fe – one that understands the unique bond between animals and people. The Helen Woodward Animal Center is a non-profit that not only cares for and finds adoptive families for homeless pets but also provides excellent therapeutic and educational programs for people. Let’s take a closer look at what this amazing local resource provides for our community.

About the Helen Woodward Animal Center

The Helen Woodward Animal Center’s guiding philosophy is that “animals help people and people help animals.” For more than 45 years, the organization has been helping both animals and people in San Diego County. Their no-kill facility is located on 12 beautiful acres in Rancho Santa Fe. There are many ways you can follow the Helen Woodward Animal Center – by visiting their website, following them on Instagram or Facebook, or subscribing to their YouTube channel to watch their inspiring videos.

Adoption services

If you’re looking for a new best friend to welcome into your Rancho Santa Fe home, then this is the place to find them! The center accepts animals from public shelters, local rescues, and owner surrenders. Each pet is spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and micro-chipped before they are placed for adoption. They offer adoption counselors who can help you find just the right match for you. Their adoption hours are Monday through Friday from noon to 6 pm, Saturday from 10 am to 6 pm, and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. Not quite ready to take the plunge into adoption just yet? Then consider becoming a foster parent for a dog or cat. By fostering an animal for a short period of time, you free up space at the center.

Community services

Not only does the center provide much-needed services for homeless pets, but they care for other pets as well. The AniMeals program feeds more than 250 pets per week belonging to homebound seniors and those with disabilities. In addition, their Pets Without Walls program helps to feed and care for the pets of homeless people with their mobile clinic.

Therapy programs

Have you ever heard of equine therapy? The Helen Woodward Animal Center provides this amazing service for children and adults with special needs. Students interact with specially trained horses to learn new skills. They also provide Pet Encounter Therapy to people in nursing homes, hospitals, and shelters. Trained staff take a variety of animals including rabbits, dogs, cats, and birds to visit people in more than 50 facilities each month.

Local events

Finally, the Helen Woodward Animal Center hosts many community events throughout the year that are fun for the whole family. Take your dog to Pawmicon at the future home of the Comic-Con Museum, enjoy a day of dog surfing at the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon, or experience an evening of tropical escape at the Spring Fling Gala. These are just a sampling of the fun things you and your family can enjoy throughout the year.
