The holiday season is upon us! This is the time of year where we gather with our friends and family to celebrate all that we have to be grateful for. It’s also during this time that we look outwards to our community and beyond to see where we may be of service to others. Here in Rancho Santa Fe, there are many ways to give back and we’ve gathered up some of our favorites. May they inspire you to give back in both big and small ways this holiday season.
Thanksgiving Critter Camp
Over Thanksgiving break, the Helen Woodward Animal Center offers a wonderful Critter Camp where kids from preschool through sixth grade can spend time with animals. It also offers an amazing opportunity for Junior Volunteers to get involved. Kids between the ages of 14 and 17 who are in the 9th – 12th grade can apply to be volunteers during the camp, which takes place from November 25-27. Volunteers will work with the kids and help teachers with animal lessons, games, and crafts. Those who are interested can fill out an online application.
The Country Friends
The Country Friends is a Rancho Santa Fe charitable organization that hosts events to raise funds for dozens of local human care agencies. These include Big Brothers, Big Sisters, San Diego Blood Bank, SD Center for the Blind and many others. By becoming a member for $100 a year, you will receive invitations to all of their events, such as the Annual Holiday Tea and the Art of Fashion Show & Luncheon. You can also volunteer with The Country Friends by helping to plan events, serving on committees, or working in their Consignment Shop located on the corner of El Tordo and Avenida de Acacias.
Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club
Do you have a green thumb? Then the Rancho Santa Fe Garden Club is a great way to get involved in the community. Formed in 1926, the organization hosts a variety of activities throughout the year including field trips, workshops, and events. In addition to beautifying the community with plants and flowers, they also provide grants to other non-profits that serve the area including San Diego Children’s Discovery Museum, Balboa Park Conservancy, and several local elementary school gardens. Not only is this a great way to give back to the community, but you’ll also make a ton of new local friends!
Adopt a Marine
Finally, do you have room at your Thanksgiving table for one or two more? Then why not adopt a Marine from Camp Pendleton? The Adopt-a-Marine for Thanksgiving program places Marines into the homes of local families for Thanksgiving dinner. The Marines are from the School of Infantry, who do not have enough time off to travel to their families on the holiday. Adoptive families will be responsible for picking up their Marines and dropping them back off at the end of the day. This is a wonderful way to truly express the meaning of Thanksgiving on a local level.
