Canyon Crest Academy

Took my son out for back-to-school shopping today. Even though he is 17, almost 6’3” and thinks he’s got the world all figured out he still loves to spend time with his mom. Ha Ha….. the bribe was clothes and food. He is a senior this year and a creative young man, he loves to write and play music. Lucky for us there is a public high school which is ideally suited for such a child……

Canyon Crest Academy

Located at 5951 Village Ctr. Loop Rd. off of Del Mar Heights Rd.

Canyon Crest Academy is a “school of choice” with enrollment determined by an application process. Any student in the San Dieguito Union High School District can apply and, if the number of applications exceeds the available seats, a lottery is held. Current enrollment is approximately 1800 students in grades 9-12. In August 2004, CCA opened its doors to the inaugural class of 342 freshmen.

In June 2008,CCA graduated its first senior class and celebrated its accomplishments. In addition to the numerous awards and achievements they earned, 75% of the class enrolled in four-year colleges and 21% enrolled in community colleges. CCA is on a 4 x 4 block schedule. Students take up to 4 ninety-minute classes per day, five days per week, in each eighteen-week Fall and Spring term.

For students who desire to expand their exposure to the arts, CCA offers Envision, a program designed to inspire and train future artists. It is an extensive curriculum with a structured sequence of progressively challenging courses in the following disciplines: Dance, Digital & Fine Art, Instrumental Music, Theater, Video & Film and Vocal Music.

For students who demonstrate exceptional potential and talent, CCA offers Envision Conservatory. Conservatory is a rigorous, audition-only extracurricular program that provides advanced instruction and training supplemented by professional teaching artists.

Canyon Crest Academy students live throughout the San Dieguito Union High School District, which includes the cities of Rancho Santa Fe, Fairbanks Ranch, Encinitas, Solana Beach, Del Mar, Cardiff, La Costa, Olivenhain, and Carmel Valley.

What proved to be fantastic for Connor, my son, were the unique elective offerings and the 4×4 schedule at Canyon Crest. With classes such as Rock Band and MIDI (a way to digitally record and write music) he became inspired to take electives and because a CCA student can finish a year of AP English in a traditional semester that leaves more time to delve into new arts and future possibilities.
