Explore California history at San Juan Capistrano
History buffs will love spending a day exploring San Juan Capistrano in Orange County. The community dates back to 1776 when the foundation was laid for Mission San Juan Capistrano, which is now a church, monument, and museum. It forms the heart of this charming small town that offers unique shops, delicious food, and beautiful scenery. You can even travel there by train, as the Capistrano Depot is located right in the center of the action.
Sail to Catalina Island
Your island adventure awaits! Did you know that there is a beautiful island that you can reach by ferry in about an hour? Catalina Island is a gorgeous destination southwest of Los Angeles that is known for its wildlife, palm trees, spas, restaurants, and the beautiful Art Deco Catalina Casino. Avalon and Two Harbors are the two ports in Catalina and ferries are available from San Pedro, Long Beach, Dana Point, and Newport Beach. If you want to feel a world away just for a day, then Catalina is just the ticket!
Cross the border to Mexico
Did you know that only 42 miles separate Rancho Santa Fe from Mexico? If you’re looking for an international adventure without going too far from home, then head to Tijuana just over the Mexican border. Visit the city’s historic center and tour buildings such as the El Foro Palacio Jai Alai concert hall or the Catedral de Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe. Stick close to home but feel far away in Julian
Finally, you don’t have to travel to another county – or another country! – to have a fabulous day trip. One of our favorite destinations is right here in San Diego county. Located in the Cuyamaca mountains about 50 miles east of Rancho Santa Fe, Julian is a quaint town that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time. The town’s history is rooted in the California Gold Rush, and you can visit shops located in historic buildings, take a self-guided History Walk, hike amidst the pines and oak trees, or sample Julian’s famous apple pie. We promise you’ll leave feeling refreshed – especially from the fresh mountain air!
